Irvine Realtor's Bail Denied in Alleged China Agent Case

At an Oct. 7 detention hearing in Los Angeles federal court, Magistrate Judge Steve Kim ordered Irvine real-estate agent Wanying "Heather" Zhang held without bail as a flight risk, with her next court date Oct. 19. Zhang, 34, was arrested Oct. 4 at LAX and is charged with acting as an unregistered agent of China; the DOJ complaint alleges she surveilled the Seattle-area home of Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's son and family from June to September 2025, sending photos back. She has been charged by complaint and not yet indicted. (GSM, from AP, the DOJ and Oct. 7 courtroom reporting)
