Labour Holds Holborn and St Pancras in By-Election as Greens Finish Second

Thursday, October 8, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Labour held the seat in the Holborn and St Pancras parliamentary by-election on 8 October, Reuters reported on 9 October: Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali won 12,292 votes, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski second on 8,928 votes. The result was formally declared on Friday 9 October.

The seat had been held by former Labour leader Keir Starmer, whose resignation triggered the by-election. The Greens mounted a serious challenge on the back of their record local election results in May, and Labour faced pressure from left-leaning voters over the war in Gaza, making the contest in this central London constituency a focus of national attention.

Analysts noted that while the Greens fell short, a vote of nearly 9,000 underlines their growing appeal among progressive voters in London, while Labour avoided the blow of losing a seat in one of its traditional strongholds.

For Andy Burnham, prime minister since July, the result is a timely boost. His government has faced fiscal and policy controversies in recent weeks, and holding the seat helps steady nerves within the party and the markets.
