ICE Agent Shoots Immigrant in the Bronx With 5-Year-Old in Car; Governor and Mayor Condemn Shooting

New York City is a city in Bronx County, New York. A federal immigration agent shot and wounded a Dominican immigrant in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx on the afternoon of October 8, in an arrest attempt that left the man's 5-year-old son in the back seat of the car and drew swift condemnation from New York's governor and mayor.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a preliminary investigation found that at least one ICE agent fired seven rounds at the vehicle, striking Oscar Belgal, 28, in the neck below his left ear. The child was not physically injured and was placed in a family member's care. Belgal was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, was later taken from NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital by unmarked ICE vehicles.
The Department of Homeland Security said agents were attempting to arrest an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record, but did not explain why the agent opened fire or whether he knew a child was in the car. Federal officials said Belgal accelerated his vehicle toward officers and that agents fired believing lives were in danger; they also cited a grand larceny conviction, a pending drug case and alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Mamdani both condemned the shooting. Mamdani told reporters he had spent two hours on the phone with President Trump and the DHS secretary negotiating Belgal's release without success, and he called for ICE to be abolished. About 300 protesters gathered outside the hospital that night, at times clashing with police.
