Greece Approves Heating Oil Subsidy Mechanism From 15 October

Greek households can expect some relief on heating costs this winter, it was reported on 9 October 2026, as a new subsidy mechanism for heating oil has been approved by Parliament. The measure was introduced through an amendment submitted the previous Wednesday, laying out how the state subsidy will work, though the exact amount has yet to be announced.
Under the new regulation, the subsidy will apply to heating oil supplied to the market from 15 October to 31 October. The legislation leaves open the possibility of extending the measure beyond 31 October and adjusting the subsidy amount later, decisions that rest with the Minister of National Economy and Finance. The exact figure will be set through a joint ministerial decision expected on 14 October, according to Deputy Finance Minister Dimitris Markopoulos.
Heating oil is the main winter heating fuel for many Greek households, and its price moves with international energy markets. Athens has reportedly set aside 400 million euros in reserves and will ask EU leaders this week to allow part of the money earmarked for energy investment to be spent on support for households and businesses, with several design options still being weighed inside the government.
The first subsidy window lasts only half a month and may be extended. The amount is to be set by joint ministerial decision on 14 October, which will establish the actual level of support for this winter.
