National Offers $300 Million in Low-Cost Farm Water Loans as Poll Puts Coalition Ahead

Friday, October 9, 2026 · World News · GSM News

New Zealand's National Party announced an agriculture policy on 9 October 2026: NZ$300 million in low-cost loans to help farmers invest in water storage. RNZ reported the announcement the same day. The policy is aimed at drought resilience and water reliability on farms, and rural electorates are both National's traditional base and a contested battleground in this campaign.

A Taxpayers' Union-Curia poll published the same day showed New Zealand First rising and the governing coalition's combined lead extending. Stuff's reporting across the latest polls said the numbers would put the coalition back in power, while the Opportunity Party fell short of the 5 per cent threshold for Parliament. Results differ between firms, and news outlets have been averaging polls to read the race.

Water storage and irrigation have been debated in farming regions for years: dry-year pasture and horticulture demand sits alongside environmental concerns about water quality. National's loan scheme is pitched on interest rates and access to finance; application conditions and repayment terms are to be detailed in policy documents.

The election takes place on 7 November. Rural seats, provincial cities and suburban Auckland are listed by both blocs as decisive ground, and the final month's policy releases and polling shifts are being tracked daily by national media.
