Vincent Thomas Bridge to Close for 16 Months From November for Deck Replacement; Temporary Closures Begin This Weekend, Virtual Open House Oct. 14

The Vincent Thomas Bridge (SR-47), linking San Pedro with Terminal Island, is heading into a major overhaul. According to the Port of Los Angeles and Caltrans, starting in November 2026 Caltrans will replace the bridge deck and modernize other components, requiring a full closure of the bridge for about 16 months; the project is valued at about $752.8 million. Detour routes, enhanced traffic control, enforcement officers and adjusted signal timing will be in place. The Port says all terminals will remain open with no expected impact to port operations, rail cargo is unaffected, and only about 8% of port drayage truck traffic uses the bridge, though local detours may add travel time.
Preparatory work is already bringing temporary closures: beginning this weekend, drivers will see a series of closures on the bridge and SR-47, including a southbound lane closure on Oct. 10 and overnight northbound closures from the night of Oct. 11 through the morning of Oct. 16, with ramps at Gaffey Street and Channel Street and the I-110 connector also affected; detours run via Pacific Coast Highway to Route 103 and then Route 47 (check Caltrans notices for exact hours, and Caltrans QuickMap before traveling).
Residents and commuters can join the Port's virtual community open house on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., covering the closure schedule, detours and traffic management plan. Built in 1963, the suspension bridge is one of the harbor area's most important crossings, used daily by commuters, port workers and freight traffic across San Pedro, Wilmington and Long Beach.
