Follow-Up: Vincent Thomas Bridge Full Closure Set for Nov. 7, Detour Routes Announced

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · California · GSM News

LOS ANGELES — Caltrans has set the start of the full closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge (State Route 47): the bridge will close at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, for approximately 16 months, with reopening targeted for early March 2028. GSM reported on October 10 that the bridge would fully close starting in November for a deck replacement. Caltrans said the date was pushed back six days from the original plan to allow final coordination and ensure the greatest construction efficiency once the bridge is closed, with no change to the construction staging or the reopening target.

The roughly $750 million project will replace the deteriorating concrete bridge deck, modernize safety features, and upgrade seismic sensors. The bridge has been in service for more than 60 years, since 1963; its concrete deck has fatigued under increasingly heavy traffic and the surrounding marine environment.

For detours, according to arrangements coordinated by Los Angeles City Councilmember Tim McOsker's office with Caltrans, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the Port of Los Angeles: drivers can head east via the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge to Interstate 710, or use SR-47/103 via Alameda Street and Harry Bridges Boulevard. The routes are designed to avoid residential streets in Wilmington, and LADOT traffic officers will be posted along the detours. Caltrans is repaving detour streets including Harry Bridges Boulevard, Alameda Street, and Henry Ford Avenue, with further repairs planned after the bridge reopens, and new left-turn signals have been installed at Drumm Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. The Port of Long Beach has separately announced extended gate hours starting in late October, for six weeks, to help keep cargo moving during the closure. All Port of Los Angeles terminals will remain open throughout.
