Swedish Speaker Gives Andersson One Extra Day: Government Report-Back Moved to Tuesday, October 13

On Sunday, October 11, Sweden's parliament issued a press release stating that Speaker Andreas Norlén had granted Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson's request for one extra day to complete her exploratory report on forming a government. The report-back, originally set for Monday, October 12, will instead take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, at the Speaker's office. SVT News reported the decision. After the meeting, Norlén will consult the deputy speakers on the next steps in the government-formation process.

This is Andersson's second exploratory mandate. She returned the first one on September 28; on October 2, Norlén gave the task back to her, asking her to report by October 12 or request an extension. He said at the time that a parliamentary vote on a prime ministerial candidate would follow this second attempt.

The deadlock stems from the seat distribution after the September 13 election: the bloc of the Social Democrats, the Left Party, the Centre Party and the Greens won 176 of the Riksdag's 349 seats, three more than the right-wing bloc of incumbent Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, but the four parties remain divided over the shape of a new government — the Left Party insists on cabinet seats, while the Centre Party refuses to sit in a government with the Left. Kristersson resigned on September 17, and his government continues as a caretaker administration handling day-to-day business.

Under Sweden's government-formation rules, the Speaker may put forward up to four prime ministerial candidates to parliament; if all four are voted down, a new election is called. Norlén has said he will not let this process take as long as the 134 days it took in 2018.
