Paris Car Show Becomes China-EU Auto Stage: Some 20 Chinese Brands Attend as EU Official Puts 350,000-a-Year Cap on Hybrid Deal

Monday, October 12, 2026 · World News · GSM News

European and Chinese automakers were expected to unveil as many as 60 new models at the Paris car show, which opened on Monday, Reuters reported on October 12. Around 20 Chinese brands, including BYD and Chery, are attending — roughly double the Chinese presence at the previous Paris show in 2024 — as a bruising price war and soft sales at home push them to expand in Europe.

The show opened days after the EU announced its hybrid-vehicle arrangement with China. An European Commission official in Paris on Monday put a figure on the deal for the first time, saying it caps Chinese hybrid imports at 350,000 units a year, though implementation remains unclear. That sits alongside Beijing's framing, published the same day, that China's quota will be no lower than other sources and will rise from a 2025 base. Analysts at Jefferies estimate BYD, Chery and SAIC's MG together accounted for about 90% of Chinese-brand hybrid sales in the EU in the first eight months of 2026, while Chinese customs data show hybrid exports to the EU roughly tripled in value in the first half, to about $7.5 billion. Stellantis alone launched six models and nine concept cars in a bid to win back share, while Volkswagen reported a third-quarter delivery drop of more than 14% — its steepest in four years — dragged down by weaker demand in China, its largest market.
