Chinese Student-Athlete Qingfang Pang Detained by ICE and Facing Removal as Attorney and School Address His Status

ITTA BENA, Miss. — The detention of Qingfang Pang, a Chinese forward on the Mississippi Valley State University men's basketball team, was disclosed by multiple U.S. outlets on October 8-9. Pang, 21, stands 6-foot-9. He was detained on September 29 while traveling from Jackson, Mississippi, to New York, and is being held at the Richwood Correctional Center in Louisiana.
The Department of Homeland Security says Pang entered the United States lawfully on November 17, 2023, was authorized to stay until September 5, 2024, and overstayed; it says he accepted voluntary departure and remains detained pending removal. His attorney, Marcus Session, says Pang did not know his visa had lapsed and was traveling to New York to see a longtime host family about his status; the attorney has sought an emergency bond hearing and reinstatement of his student status. Monroe University, Pang's previous school, said on October 8 that his transfer records had been ready since spring and that it received the formal request only on October 7. Mississippi Valley State confirmed Pang remains a full-time student and expressed concern.
