Chinese College Basketball Player Qingfang Pang Released on $12,000 Bond; Deportation Case Still Pending

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Qingfang Pang, the Chinese men's basketball player at Mississippi Valley State University, was released on a $12,000 bond on October 20 after three weeks in ICE detention over an overstayed visa — but still faces a hearing that could lead to deportation. ESPN reported that the next immigration court hearing in his case is set for October 27.
According to ClutchPoints, citing ESPN's T.J. Quinn reporting on October 20, Pang was detained by ICE on September 29. A Department of Homeland Security statement said: "He legally entered the U.S. on November 17, 2023… illegally overstayed." His attorney called it a procedural oversight, saying Pang did not know his visa had not been renewed.
The 6-foot-9 Pang was a three-star high school recruit who drew offers from schools including Michigan and Oregon.
