PARIKA, Guyana — A six-year-old Chinese boy was chopped to death on Sept. 30 in Parika, East Bank Essequibo, and a 76-year-old Chinese man, Quan Sheng Li, has been charged with his murder and remanded in custody.

The victim, Zi Feng Cao, was a student at Precious Lamb Primary School. Police and local media reported that at about 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 30, the boy was attacked inside his family's business, Kenny's Ocean Restaurant on Johnson Street in Parika, sustaining a chop wound to the neck. He was rushed to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had reportedly returned home from school shortly before the attack.

Prosecutors told the court that Li, who works as a cook, had gone to the restaurant that day and argued with the boy's parents over repayment of money he said was owed to him; Kaieteur News reported that the dispute involved about US$3 million. The prosecution said the boy approached Li to hug him and was slashed to the neck. Li was arrested shortly afterwards. Police said he confessed to investigators and led officers to the place where he had discarded the weapon, which was recovered.

On Oct. 5, Li appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate's Court, where the murder charge was read to him. He was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. Police told the court that the investigation remains incomplete, with a post-mortem examination and additional statements still outstanding. The boy was laid to rest in early October.

The case is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 5, 2026. GSM will continue to follow it.
