Fire at Bangladesh Beach Resort Kills 10; Resort Had No Valid Fire Safety Licence, Officials Say

At least 10 people were killed and several others injured in a fire on Saturday morning, October 17, at a resort near Inani Beach in Cox's Bazar, a popular tourist destination in southeastern Bangladesh, officials said, according to Reuters. Children were among the dead.
The fire broke out at the three-storey wooden Tuptup Resto and Resort at Patuartek, near Inani. Fire Service and Civil Defence officials said they received information about the fire at around 7:25 a.m. local time and brought the blaze under complete control at about 11 a.m. Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain, a deputy assistant director of the Cox's Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the fire occurred at the resort.
Fire service officials said the resort was operating without a valid fire safety licence, and local media reported the fire service had cautioned the resort in June this year. A five-member investigation committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire, and authorities said they would examine possible regulatory failures.
Cox's Bazar is one of Bangladesh's most popular seaside destinations. The incident has raised fresh concerns about fire safety compliance at tourist resorts in the coastal district, where several resort fires have been reported in recent years.
