Raleigh S-Line Rail Project Gets $550 Million Federal Obligation

Raleigh is a city in Wake County, North Carolina. The U.S. Department of Transportation said the Federal Railroad Administration has obligated $550 million for North Carolina's S-Line rail project, advancing the Raleigh-to-Wake Forest segment and future passenger service toward Richmond, Virginia. State officials announced the obligation on October 16 at the Durant Road grade-separation project in Raleigh.
The federal agency said the money will fund critical track repairs and upgrades, and that the completed corridor is expected to cut Raleigh-to-Richmond travel time by up to 90 minutes, support more trips and improve reliability, while increasing corridor bandwidth for freight. The News & Observer reported the $550 million is the first half of a previously awarded $1.1 billion federal grant; the state transportation department plans to use it for the first Wake County leg, including corridor acquisition and new tracks that would extend Piedmont service to Wake Forest by 2032.
The Durant Road bridge work, part of the Raleigh-to-Wake Forest segment, is in its final stages, with the bridge expected to be completed in November 2026 and final restoration concluding in July 2028. The remaining $550 million has not been released and is expected as project milestones are completed.
