DOJ Charges 16 Noncitizens in North Carolina, New York and Idaho With Illegal Voting

The Justice Department's Office of Public Affairs announced on October 16 that 16 noncitizens in North Carolina, New York and Idaho, including one unlawfully present alien, have been charged in connection with illegal voting, false claims of U.S. citizenship, and related election crimes. The department stressed that complaints, indictments and informations merely contain accusations, and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
In the Eastern District of North Carolina, 10 people were charged with illegally voting in the 2024 elections. Eduardd Omar Majano Sosa, 22, an unlawfully present alien from El Salvador, was charged with falsely claiming citizenship to vote and with voting by an alien; he registered in 2024 and voted in the 2024 general election. The other nine are lawful permanent residents from the former Yugoslavia, Germany, Jamaica, Haiti, Panama and Canada, most charged with both false citizenship claims and voting by an alien. According to the department, some registered as early as 1998, 2004 or 2008 and allegedly voted in multiple general elections through 2024.
In the Northern District of New York, five lawful permanent residents from the United Kingdom, Canada and Bosnia were arrested and charged with voting by an alien, for allegedly voting in elections held in part to elect the President, Vice President, senators or members of the House. In Idaho, Canadian national Taralynn Bosco, 48, a lawful permanent resident, was charged with illegal voting by an alien for allegedly voting in the 2022 general election while not a U.S. citizen.
It was the department's second batch announcement of election-crime charges within a week: on October 12 it announced a separate set of cases involving 16 individuals, covering alien voting, voting on behalf of a deceased person and double voting. Federal enforcement against noncitizen voting has visibly intensified as the November midterm elections approach.
