Thousands March in Tunis in One of the Largest Anti-Government Protests in Years

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

TUNIS — Thousands of demonstrators marched through the Tunisian capital on Saturday in one of the largest anti-government protests the country has seen in years, according to AFP and Reuters. The protesters walked along Habib Bourguiba Avenue in central Tunis; AFP estimated the crowd at more than 3,000 people.

The march was called by the UGTT labour union federation together with civil-society groups and opposition parties. Demonstrators demanded the release of detained government critics and journalists, an end to restrictions on union rights, and action on rising prices, water and power cuts and medicine shortages.

President Kais Saied dissolved parliament and expanded presidential powers in 2021, and opposition activity has faced tightening restrictions since then, with a number of critics jailed. The southern region of Gabès has also seen protests in recent weeks over industrial pollution.
