Follow-Up: Nor'easter Hits the Outer Banks: NC-12 Closed as Seawater Inundates Rodanthe Neighborhoods

A powerful nor'easter struck North Carolina's Outer Banks on October 20, with large waves overtopping dunes and washing onto roadways, forcing the closure of a stretch of NC-12 near Pea Island. In Rodanthe, seawater at high tide pushed directly into neighborhood streets, flooding multiple communities.
According to the weather service, the storm's heavy surf will keep pounding the shoreline, and the Outer Banks face a prolonged period of wave impacts. The state transportation department urged drivers to avoid affected road segments, and coastal residents were warned to guard against further flooding and erosion.
Nor'easters are a common autumn weather system along the U.S. East Coast, typically bringing strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding.
The low-lying Outer Banks are among the areas hit hardest every hurricane and storm season. Local emergency officials said the timing of the highway's reopening will depend on surf conditions, and urged residents to follow official weather warnings closely.
