UN Condemns Deadly Wave of Drone Strikes Across Sudan

The United Nations on Monday condemned a deadly wave of drone strikes across Sudan that killed and injured civilians, including children, UN News reported on October 19. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told journalists in New York that the UN is alarmed by the continued deadly drone strikes, which are killing civilians and disrupting essential services. On Monday alone, drone strikes injured at least 19 people in a busy market in Abyei and targeted several locations in the capital, Khartoum, including an area near the airport; one civilian was reportedly killed and some flights were cancelled. Over the weekend, drone attacks reportedly killed at least 19 people, including 10 children, across West Darfur, South Darfur and North Kordofan states. Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, in a briefing to the Security Council last Friday, urged external actors to stop fuelling the violence and drone usage and called on the warring parties to return to the negotiating table. Fighting erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UN also raised grave concern over the targeting of aid workers: since the conflict began, 25 Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers have reportedly been killed while on duty, including one killed last week while providing first aid at a health centre in Um Darfa, Blue Nile State, following a drone attack. Some 20 million people in Sudan face acute hunger, with a rising risk of famine in parts of Darfur and Greater Kordofan, and the country's humanitarian response plan is just over 43 percent funded, the UN said.
