First Vermont Governor's Debate Tonight: Phil Scott Faces Amanda Janoo With a 10-Point Polling Lead

The first televised debate in Vermont's governor's race will be held tonight, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. on Vermont Public, pitting Republican incumbent Gov. Phil Scott against Democratic challenger Amanda Janoo. Two more debates follow: Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. on NBC5 and Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. on WCAX.
Scott, from Barre, is seeking a sixth term and formerly owned a construction company; Janoo is an economist running for office for the first time. Janoo outraised Scott in September fundraising. The Republican Governors Association has given $400,000 to an independent-expenditure PAC running ads supporting Scott.
In polling, a Braun Research survey for Vermont Public, conducted Sept. 10–21 among 817 residents, put Scott ahead of Janoo 44 percent to 34 percent among likely voters, with 16 percent undecided and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 points. Major election forecasters rate the race "Likely R." Under Vermont law, if no candidate wins a majority, the legislature selects the governor. Election Day is Nov. 3.
