Second Vermont Gubernatorial Debate Tonight: NBC5 Airs Scott-Janoo Matchup at 8 p.m.

The second debate in Vermont's gubernatorial race will air tonight (October 22) at 8 p.m., hosted by NBC5, with Republican Gov. Phil Scott, seeking a sixth term, facing Democratic/Progressive challenger Amanda Janoo again. The two completed their first debate on October 21 on Vermont Public, and a third debate will air on WCAX-TV on October 28 at 7 p.m.

According to Seven Days, the first debate showed clear differences on homelessness, crime and drug addiction: Janoo favors a "housing first" approach providing permanent housing with wraparound supports, while Scott touted the "accountability court" his administration established in Burlington, emphasizing accountability alongside mental-health and addiction recovery. On nuclear power, Janoo said she will not support developing it until the nuclear waste problem is solved.

The debate ended on a surprisingly friendly note: Scott named former Democratic U.S. senator Patrick Leahy and the late state senator Dick Mazza as figures he respects, while Janoo said she respects Scott himself, calling him "super nice."

Janoo, an economist with the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, has never run for office before. Two September polls diverged sharply: a Vermont Public poll released in late September had Scott leading by 10 points, while the University of New Hampshire's Green Mountain State Poll showed Janoo ahead 49% to 43%.
