Update: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee Meets Lai Ching-te in Taiwan: Signs Trade MOU and Announces a Taiwan Office

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee visited Taiwan on Oct. 20-21, meeting President Lai Ching-te at the Presidential Office in Taipei on the afternoon of Oct. 21. According to Taiwan's announcement, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on economic and trade cooperation covering innovation and research collaboration in electric vehicles, high-tech manufacturing and new energy. Lee announced that Tennessee will open a representative office in Taiwan — the state's sixth overseas office and its first foreign direct investment (FDI) office in Taiwan. On the evening of Oct. 20, Taiwan's foreign affairs chief hosted a welcome dinner for Lee's delegation in Taipei.
Lai said Taiwan sees Tennessee as a key site for its global deployment, noting that Taiwan's tech industry has already established SI server manufacturing facilities in Tennessee with capacity still expanding; Taiwan is Tennessee's 18th largest export market and seventh largest source of imports. According to Tennessee's economic development department, the trip is Lee's sixth international recruiting mission since taking office in 2019. He is accompanied by Deputy Governor and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter, and the itinerary also includes South Korea and Japan, with meetings at companies already invested in Tennessee, including Quanta Manufacturing, LG Chem, SK On and Bridgestone.
