Follow-up: Driver Fatally Shot on George Washington Bridge Identified as Con Edison Worker Koran Irvine, No Arrests Yet

A 46-year-old man who was shot while driving across the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday evening has died, police said, according to the Associated Press. The victim was identified as Koran Irvine of Valley Cottage, in Rockland County, New York. He worked for the utility Con Edison and was off duty at the time, the company said.
Police said the shooting happened toward the end of the Tuesday evening rush, at about 7:15 p.m., on the upper level of the bridge on the New Jersey-bound side, which connects New York City and New Jersey. Officers from the Port Authority Police Department and the NYPD found Irvine unconscious in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Englewood Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Closed lanes reopened around midnight, about five hours after the shooting. GSM previously reported that officers responding to a single-vehicle crash had found the driver with an apparent gunshot wound and that the New Jersey-bound upper level was closed.
No arrests have been made, and authorities have not given a possible motive. Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that investigators preliminarily believe the shooting stemmed from road rage: video reviewed by investigators shows Irvine's vehicle appearing to drift slightly toward another car as both entered the upper level, the other driver's dark-colored sedan then pulling up alongside the rear passenger side, and Irvine's vehicle suddenly jerking, likely the moment a single shot was fired. The bullet preliminarily appears to have pierced the back window, grazed a headrest and entered his right shoulder, the sources said. NBC News reported that authorities are examining whether the shooting stemmed from a road-rage encounter, though investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive. The suspect's vehicle drove off, and it was not immediately clear whether more than one person was inside it.
Con Edison mourned the employee in a statement on Wednesday. "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence," a company spokesperson said. "Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him."
Opened to traffic in 1931, the double-decked George Washington Bridge spans the Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the bridge, it carries around 100 million vehicles a year and is the world's busiest motor-vehicle bridge, with cameras throughout the bridge and its entrances.
