Follow-Up: Ex-Detective Indicted on Second-Degree Murder in George Washington Bridge Road-Rage Shooting; Family and Co-Workers Rally to Revoke Bail

New York City, New York County, New York — The Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced on October 27 that a grand jury voted that day to indict Victor Romero, a 62-year-old retired NYPD detective, on a charge of second-degree murder, accusing him of fatally shooting Con Edison worker Koran Irvine in a road-rage incident on the George Washington Bridge. If convicted, Romero could face life in prison.
Prosecutors had earlier appeared to be proceeding on a manslaughter theory, drawing dissatisfaction from the victim's relatives and co-workers. During the evening commute on October 20, after the two cars nearly collided on the bridge approach, Romero allegedly pulled alongside Irvine's Volkswagen Golf and fired one shot through the window on the upper-level westbound deck; the bullet struck Irvine in the right shoulder and exited through his neck. Irvine's car then struck the center divider, while Romero drove off and returned to his home in Haverstraw via the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Irvine, 46, married with two children, was driving home to Valley Cottage after work that night and was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital in Englewood, New Jersey.
On the afternoon of October 27, hundreds of Irvine's Con Edison co-workers and family members rallied at Foley Square in Manhattan under the banner "Justice for Irvine," chanting "jail, no bail" and demanding answers about the whereabouts of bridge surveillance video. The family's attorney said that day that the family welcomed the upgraded charge and is now pushing to have Romero's bail revoked. The above are prosecutors' allegations, subject to determination at trial.
