Follow-up: Toledo Chemical Leak Evacuations Fully Lifted; Final 152 Residents Return Home

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo chemical leak reached its wind-down stage as Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced on the afternoon of October 23 that all evacuation orders had been lifted and the final 152 evacuated residents could return home.
The chemical tank involved was drained late on October 22. Investigators determined the release began when an employee error during a transfer introduced heat and triggered a chemical reaction; the company, MC Tank Transport/Terminal, has accepted responsibility. The chemical was glycidyl methacrylate, and 57 people received medical treatment in the incident. The facility is at 1266 Progress Ave.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues monitoring and cleanup at the site. Battalion Chief Blake Molnar said air monitoring readings remain normal and advised returning residents to seek care if symptoms appear.
