Minnesota Responds to Two Measles Clusters: 25 Cases Since Mid-September and 42 This Year

Saturday, October 24, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said the state is responding to two unrelated measles clusters, in Fillmore County and Todd County, with 25 cases reported since mid-September — six in Fillmore County and 19 in Todd County. All of the recent cases were in people who had not been vaccinated.

In an October 15 statement, MDH said Minnesota's measles total for 2026 has reached 42 cases, and that the number will very likely continue to grow. The department said the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the strongest protection against measles.

The governor's office briefing noted that more than 4,000 measles cases have been confirmed nationwide this year. Governor Tim Walz urged residents to get their flu shots and updated COVID-19 vaccinations, and to stay up to date on MMR vaccination.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air. MDH advises people with symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash to call a health care provider before going in, to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
