Bridgeport and Fairfield jointly urge Siting Council to delay or deny United Illuminating monopole project

On October 25, the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut, issued a statement joining the Town of Fairfield and state lawmakers in urging the Connecticut Siting Council to delay or deny United Illuminating's plan to erect large monopoles along the Metro-North rail corridor. The statement noted that a northern portion of the design had previously been overturned by a superior court over procedural problems, including inadequate notice to property owners and violations of state law, and that the towns have long argued the project failed to adequately consider alternative designs with smaller impacts on historic, cultural and religious areas. Bridgeport and Fairfield said they remain willing to negotiate with the utility to protect transmission reliability while meeting community needs, but that the company has shown little flexibility. A six-month delay in the vote, they argued, would allow substantive talks and a search for alternatives rather than forcing the project through with disputes unresolved. At its core, the dispute balances transmission upgrades against the protection of neighborhoods, businesses, natural resources and historic religious properties along the line. The city said it will keep working to protect local commerce, natural resources and historic and religious properties.
