Follow-Up: Bridgeport Mayor Welcomes Siting Council’s October 29 Rejection of United Illuminating Monopole Plan, Insists on Real Talks and Underground Option

Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut: Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim issued a statement on October 29 welcoming the Connecticut Siting Council’s decision that day to deny United Illuminating’s application to erect monopoles along the Metro-North railroad.

Ganim said the council appropriately listened to the concerns of officials and residents of Bridgeport and the town of Fairfield, voices he said were not heard when the proposal was first filed in 2023. The denial means that if United Illuminating wishes to move forward, it must engage in a substantive public process with Bridgeport and Fairfield, which is what both communities have sought all along.

Ganim thanked the residents who spoke out, the attorneys who successfully represented the city before the Siting Council and in Superior Court, and the legislators who amplified residents’ concerns. He said he continues to insist that if the project is built it should be placed underground, and that he is willing to negotiate in good faith with United Illuminating on an acceptable underground alternative.
