Falcons Upset 49ers 29-20 to Hand San Francisco Its First Loss: Penix Throws Three TDs as Atlanta Forces Four Turnovers

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons handed the San Francisco 49ers their first loss of the season on Sunday, winning 29-20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Week 7. San Francisco fell to 6-1, while Atlanta snapped a two-game skid to improve to 3-4 with its first home win of the season.
San Francisco led 14-3 early before Atlanta scored 23 unanswered points to go up 26-14 early in the fourth quarter. The 49ers rallied when Brock Purdy found Kyle Juszczyk for a 1-yard touchdown with 5:05 left, but Eddy Pineiro missed the extra point to keep it 26-20.
Rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels intercepted Purdy with 2:29 remaining, setting up Nick Folk's 31-yard field goal after the two-minute warning for a 29-20 lead. George Kittle then fumbled near the Atlanta 20 on the 49ers' final drive, with Jessie Bates III recovering to seal the upset.
Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, hitting Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Tanner Muse for scores; London caught seven passes for 66 yards. Purdy threw two interceptions — his first multi-interception game of the season — as San Francisco committed four turnovers. The 49ers have their bye in Week 8.
