Follow-Up: 15-Year-Old Arrested in Florida A&M Homecoming Shooting, Faces 11 Attempted Murder Counts; Police Say None of the 12 Victims Was an Intended Target

Police in Tallahassee, Florida, announced on October 26 that a 15-year-old boy was arrested on October 25 in connection with the October 24 shooting outside Bragg Memorial Stadium at Florida A&M University. Police spokeswoman Alicia Hill identified the teenager as Anthony Rivers III and said he faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent; the charges are allegations to be resolved in court. Twelve people were injured in the shooting, 11 of them by gunfire; six of the victims are juveniles, the youngest 11 years old.
At an October 26 news conference, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the investigation indicates a physical altercation occurred before shots were fired, involving individuals who were known to one another, and described the incident as an isolated dispute between two or three people. "At this stage of the investigation, none of the victims appear to have been the intended targets," Revell said. He had earlier said detectives believed there was a single shooter; on October 26 he said additional arrests and charges are possible.
As of Sunday morning, five victims had been released from hospital and six remained hospitalized, one of them in critical condition; the twelfth victim, a grandmother of one of the victims, was injured while fleeing the scene. "What should have been a weekend of celebration in our community instead became a night of fear and violence for the victims and their families," Revell said. "While this arrest marks a significant step forward, our work is far from over."
The shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. on October 24 near Perry and Manatee streets, behind the stadium, hours after Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Florida A&M 31-28 in the homecoming game at the stadium. Police asked witnesses to call 850-891-4200, or Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS to remain anonymous.
