Follow-Up: Washington, District of Columbia: Trump Administration Confirms to Court the November 15 Closure of East Potomac Park for a Championship Golf Course

The East Potomac Park closure plan in Washington, District of Columbia, took a new step. According to the Associated Press, the Justice Department filed notice on the night of October 28 confirming that President Donald Trump's announcements of plans to renovate the East Potomac Golf Course and to close the park beginning November 15 are accurate, and that the government will meet the November 15 deadline to clear the way for a championship-level golf course capable of hosting major events such as the U.S. Open.
On October 30, the National Park Service will submit to the National Capital Planning Commission a rendering designed by Tom Fazio for the course, and the commission will consider the plan at its December 3 meeting. On November 15, the Park Service will close East Potomac Park south of Buckeye Drive, including the golf course. The National Links Trust, which currently operates the course, will cease operating East Potomac by the close of business on or before November 15 but will continue to operate two other public golf courses.
East Potomac Park sits on the Potomac River and is one of Washington's most familiar public green spaces. The plan has already drawn a lawsuit from the DC Preservation League and two golfers. U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes issued a preliminary injunction on October 26 barring the government from removing or damaging additional trees on the course and requiring 10 days' written notice before any irreparable modification while the suit is active.
Trump had announced on social media on October 18 that the park would close November 15 for a renovation of about 15 months. The next steps in court and in the planning process will decide the park's final fate.
