Follow-Up: Tampa Council Approves Rays Ballpark Community Benefits Agreement 4-3, With $60 Million in Community Spending and Cash Share Raised to 70%

Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida: The Tampa City Council voted 4-3 on October 29 to approve the community benefits agreement for the Tampa Bay Rays’ proposed new ballpark, clearing another hurdle for the deal. The agreement outlines $60 million of spending in Tampa and Hillsborough County.
According to Sports Business Journal, the Rays submitted a revised agreement at 7 a.m. on the day of the vote to address some council members’ concerns. The revisions raise cash contributions from 65% to 70% for the first five years, establish a community committee that will meet twice a year, and set a goal of apprentices enrolled to be 8% rather than "best efforts" by ballpark contractors.
The vote came a few weeks after council members struggled to approve a procedural funding decision for the project, and the agreement’s passage was reported as another hurdle cleared for the ballpark deal. Further steps in the ballpark process remain ahead.
