Follow-Up: New Mexico Commits Another $42.75 Million to Flood Recovery as 57 Emergency Orders Target Debris and Infrastructure

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced on October 29 that she has signed 57 emergency executive orders committing $42.75 million, $750,000 through each order, to flood recovery across the state, paying for debris removal and repairs to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
Flooding that began October 22 has caused severe damage centered in San Juan County in the state's northwest. Damage may exceed $200 million, thousands of homes have been damaged, raw sewage has entered the San Juan River amid downed power lines, and officials warn of a gas-leak risk. Combined with $3.75 million released September 30 and $8.25 million on October 26, the governor's office has now directed roughly $55 million to flood response within a month.
The President signed a federal Emergency Declaration on Friday, but federal reimbursement for debris removal and emergency protective measures has not yet been approved. If approved, the federal government would cover 75 percent of eligible costs and state and local governments 25 percent. The state is meanwhile preparing a request for a Major Disaster Declaration.
Local governments can apply for state funding through the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM). The governor's office has posted resident resources, including assistance information and recovery guidance, at governor.state.nm.us/flooding-resources.
