Violinist Joshua Brown Makes His San Diego Debut March 20 and 21 in Shostakovich
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts a San Diego Symphony Masterworks program on March 20, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and March 21 at 2 p.m. Music and Artistic Director Rafael Payare conducts, and young American violinist Joshua Brown makes his debut with the orchestra in Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1.
Brown received a 2025 Avery Fisher Career Grant, awarded to soloists on the verge of a major career. Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto, composed in 1948 and withheld until 1955 under political pressure, pairs a monumental passacaglia with a whirlwind finale and ranks among the great violin concertos of the 20th century. The program also includes Gabriela Ortiz's Kauyumari, Bartók's Miraculous Mandarin suite and Stravinsky's Firebird suite of 1919.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; Payare's contract runs through the 2028-29 season.
