Bernstein's West Side Story Dances on March 26 and 27, With Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Symphonic Dances comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on March 26, 2027, at 11 a.m. and March 27 at 7:30 p.m. Music and Artistic Director Rafael Payare conducts; Philadelphia Orchestra principal clarinet Ricardo Morales makes his debut with the ensemble in Esa-Pekka Salonen's clarinet concerto kínēma, and the second half pairs Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story with Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. The March 26 performance is the series' Friday matinee; Antonio Estévez's Mediodía en el llano opens the program.
Two valedictory works share the title: Bernstein's dances draw mambo and cool jazz from his musical into the symphony orchestra, while Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances of 1940 was the composer's last work. Salonen's kínēma, a five-movement concerto written in 2021, has become a signature piece for Morales.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians.
