Alisa Weilerstein Plays Elgar's Cello Concerto Jan. 29 and 30: Payare Conducts Symphonie Fantastique
The Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, hosts a San Diego Symphony Masterworks program on Jan. 29 and 30, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. Music and Artistic Director Rafael Payare conducts, with American cellist Alisa Weilerstein as soloist in Elgar's Cello Concerto and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique on the second half.
Written in 1919, Elgar's Cello Concerto was the composer's last major work, famed for the cello's opening recitative and the backward glance of its finale. Weilerstein is among the most prominent cellists of her generation, known for Bach's solo suites and for championing new music. Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, from 1830, tells in five movements the story of an artist's obsession and dreams, and founded the Romantic program symphony.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; Payare's contract runs through the 2028-29 season.
