Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony Plays San Diego on Jan. 16 and 17, With Rorem's English Horn Concerto
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Russian Elegance, American Lyricism comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on Jan. 16, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. Bulgarian conductor Delyana Lazarova leads the orchestra; principal English horn player Andrea Overturf solos in Ned Rorem's English horn concerto, Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 closes the program, and Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila overture opens it.
Written in 1906-07, Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony, whose Adagio melody is among the composer's most famous pages, restored the confidence he lost after his First Symphony's failure. Rorem, a major American composer of the 20th century, wrote his concerto for an instrument that rarely takes the solo spotlight.
