Debussy's La Mer on March 5 and 7, With Ravel's Shéhérazade
The San Diego Symphony's Masterworks program Music of Sea and Story comes to the Jacobs Music Center in San Diego, San Diego County, California, on March 5, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. and March 7 at 2 p.m. British conductor Edward Gardner leads the orchestra; American mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke sings Ravel's Shéhérazade, and Debussy's La mer closes the program. Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and Tchaikovsky's fantasy overture The Tempest complete an all-sea program.
Composed in 1905, La mer traces the sea from dawn to storm in three symphonic sketches and stands at the summit of Impressionist orchestral writing. Ravel's Shéhérazade sets exotic poems of the Thousand and One Nights for mezzo-soprano and orchestra. Gardner is principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
The venue is the Jacobs Music Center, 1245 Seventh Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets are sold through the orchestra's official channels. The hall also hosts the family concert Carnival of the Animals on March 6.
Founded in 1910, the San Diego Symphony is California's oldest orchestra, with 82 full-time musicians; its music and artistic director is Rafael Payare.
