NYC 7 Line Station Repairs Extended Five Months as Price Tag Soars to $254 Million

Repairs at two stations on New York City's 7 line in Queens, New York, will take five more months: Metropolitan Transportation Authority documents released November 1 show completion pushed from October 20 to next March, with the project's price tag rising to about $254 million.
The affected segment is the Flushing-bound platforms at the 52nd Street and 69th Street stations. Inspectors found 22 more deteriorated sections in the steel beams supporting the platforms, forcing an expanded scope of work; the added work alone costs $2.8 million. The contract originally cost $217 million; earlier changes had already added $34.5 million, and the latest adjustment brings the total to $254.4 million, about 17% above the original price. The MTA documents attribute part of the increase to resequencing costs and ten months of schedule-impact costs.
Flushing-bound trains have skipped both stations since May, forcing riders to detour, and the skip-stop arrangement will now last until at least January. The MTA says the additional steel repairs are necessary for platform safety and that crews will work to the revised schedule toward a March completion.
