DC Election Day: 75 Vote Centers Open Until 8 p.m., Mail Ballots Must Be Postmarked Tuesday

Monday, November 2, 2026 · City · GSM News

Election Day in Washington, D.C., is Tuesday, November 3. With early voting having ended on November 1, the following rules apply on Election Day itself.

The District now votes largely by mail, and every registered voter has been sent a mail ballot. Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 3 and received by the Board of Elections by November 13; ballots returned to a drop box must be in by 8 p.m. on November 3.

On Election Day the District will open 75 vote centers, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters may use any vote center. The District also offers same-day registration: residents who have lived in D.C. since October 4 but are not yet registered may register and vote at a vote center on Election Day by showing proof of District residence.

On November 3, District voters will choose their first new mayor in 12 years and their first new nonvoting delegate to the U.S. House in 35 years, along with the D.C. Council chair and members and the attorney general, and will decide Initiative 86, which would ban foie gras produced by force-feeding birds and prohibit its sale. Voters who need language help can call the Election Protection hotline at 888-API-VOTE for Mandarin and Cantonese assistance. Nationwide, more than 54 million voters have already cast early ballots, according to the Associated Press.
