Follow-Up: Dispute Over Tarrant County's 92 Cut Polling Sites Continues as First-Week Early Turnout Jumps 63%

The dispute over Tarrant County, Texas's decision to cut 92 polling locations ahead of the 2026 midterms continues. As GSM reported earlier, the county's five-member Commissioners Court voted in September to reduce polling sites from 316 in the 2022 midterms to 224 this year. With Election Day on November 3 approaching, community groups are working to make sure affected voters know their new locations.
According to ABC News on November 2, Tarrant County — in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex — is the largest Texas county Donald Trump won in the 2024 presidential election, with 51.86% of the vote, and has become a swing county in recent years. A September analysis by ABC News and its owned-station data team found that 21 ZIP codes where more than 75% of residents are non-white lost 37 polling sites between 2022 and this year, about 40% of the county's total losses. In ZIP code 76010, Election Day sites fell from eight to three, and in 76119 from nine to three, with no replacements.
The Fort Worth chapter of the NAACP has launched phone-banking and texting drives to notify voters who previously used closed sites, and partnered with Trinity Metro to provide free round-trip rides to the polls during early voting and on Election Day. County officials said first-week early voting turnout was up 63% over 2022, though long lines were reported at many sites.
Republican Commissioner Matt Krause, who voted for the cuts, said the number of locations complies with state law and avoids clustering polling places; County Judge Tim O'Hare said 54 of the 224 locations available on Election Day exceed the statutory minimum. Democratic Commissioner Roderick Miles Jr. said some families had voted at the same locations for decades and that removing them creates barriers.
