Seattle DOT Runs Annual Snow Plow Drills: 1,000-Plus Lane Miles to Hospitals and Schools Prioritized

In Seattle, King County, Washington, the Seattle Department of Transportation conducted its annual snow plow training exercise on November 2 and 3, testing equipment and making sure plow drivers know their routes ahead of winter weather.
In a November 2 post on its official blog, the department said drivers would travel a pre-identified network of arterial streets across the city during the exercise, following the routes they would clear during and after a real snow and ice storm, while other city specialists made sure vehicles, equipment and supplies were in place at maintenance facilities.
The department said it monitors weather around the clock and pre-treats major arterials before snow begins to prevent ice from forming. More than 1,000 lane miles of the city's most critical routes, serving hospitals, schools, emergency services and shelters, are prioritized for plowing, and clearing them all can take up to 12 hours after a storm break.
Acting Director Angela Brady said crews prepare for winter storms year-round and the exercise is one part of that work, giving staff practice before real winter weather arrives.
