Follow-Up: DC At-Large Councilmember Robert White Resigns to Protect Delegate Candidacy

Monday, November 2, 2026 · City · GSM News

In Washington, District of Columbia, at-large DC Councilmember Robert White officially resigned his council seat on November 2 to ensure his eligibility as the Democratic nominee for DC delegate in the November 3 election.

A 1970s law provides that the delegate cannot hold another paid public office on Election Day. White spoke outside the Wilson Building after his resignation, thanking his staff and family, and said he wanted to make sure nothing stands, or even appears to stand, between this day and the next mission.

White has served on the council for 10 years and, if elected, would take over for longtime DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton. His resignation triggers the process to fill the at-large vacancy; the DC Democratic Party said last week it is working on the selection and will make it at an appropriate time.
