Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens Endorses Republican Senate Candidate Mike Rogers Two Days Before Election Day; Schumer Calls It a 'Despicable Betrayal'

DETROIT, Michigan, November 1 — Democratic US Representative Haley Stevens of Michigan announced on Sunday, November 1, that she is endorsing Republican Senate candidate and former Representative Mike Rogers, just two days before the November 3 election. Stevens narrowly lost the Democratic Senate primary in August to Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed and had previously said she would back the Democratic ticket; Sunday's reversal followed a public falling-out with El-Sayed.

After appearing with Rogers at a church service at Perfecting Church on Detroit's east side on Sunday, Stevens said in a video posted on social media: “Our Democratic nominee for US Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he's right. And that's why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today. I don't belong in Abdul's campaign. I'm still a very proud Democrat.” She also said she does not stand with political streamer Hasan Piker. Stevens had been expected to attend a different church event with El-Sayed on Sunday; the El-Sayed campaign had asked her not to attend after she issued an extensive statement on October 30 calling on El-Sayed to condemn an advertisement from an outside political action committee.

Reactions came quickly. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat who said in June that he thought Stevens had the best chance of beating Rogers, called her endorsement of the Republican a “despicable betrayal” on Sunday. Michigan Democratic Party chair Curtis Hertel wrote on social media that Stevens “is not a current member of the Michigan Democratic Party, nor will she be in the future.” At a press availability with Stevens on Sunday, Rogers said he was proud to earn her vote, adding: “Candidly, I'm glad I'm not running against Haley Stevens today.” President Donald Trump later praised Stevens' endorsement, calling it “brave.” El-Sayed said he was less interested in the campaign back-and-forth than in the cost of living and other issues.

The Senate race will decide the seat held by retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters and is seen as a contest that could influence control of the closely divided chamber. The RealClearPolling average (September 28 to October 29), as cited by the New York Post, showed El-Sayed ahead 49.1% to 45.6%. Rogers lost his 2024 Senate race by less than half a percentage point.
