Follow-Up: New Mexico Governor Seeks Major Disaster Declaration for Northern Floods: 604 Homes Damaged, Losses May Top $200 Million

The Office of the Governor of New Mexico, in Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, said on November 2 that Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham had formally asked the President that day to declare the flooding in northern New Mexico a federal major disaster, opening the way for federal aid to residents and local governments.
The flooding struck between October 22 and 30. The requested Individual Assistance would cover San Juan, Cibola, Socorro and Santa Fe counties, along with the Acoma and Laguna pueblos. The requested Public Assistance, which reimburses response and repair costs, would cover San Juan, Cibola, Rio Arriba, Socorro and Valencia counties and the same two pueblos.
State assessments count 604 homes damaged or destroyed, including 353 destroyed or with major damage, and 64 homes destroyed in San Juan County alone; later assessments could push the housing toll toward 2,000. More than 36 people were rescued, more than 5,000 evacuated, and over 130 nursing home residents relocated. As of November 2, 190 people remained at the Red Cross shelter at McGee Park in Farmington.
The state estimates road and bridge repairs at more than $40 million, agricultural losses at about $42 million, and total losses above $200 million. The governor has signed 73 emergency executive orders and committed more than $54 million in state funds. An October 24 emergency declaration request was only partially approved, prompting this major disaster request.
