Brooklyn Jogger, 28, Declared Brain Dead After Being Stabbed in the Neck: Police Offer $10,000 Reward for Tips

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said Katie Suarez, a 28-year-old bank teller, was stabbed multiple times in the neck at about 8 p.m. on October 30 while jogging on the Shore Parkway Greenway waterfront trail in the Bath Beach area of Brooklyn, New York. She was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition and has since been declared brain dead and placed on life support. On November 2, police announced a $10,000 Crime Stoppers reward for information leading to an arrest.
According to police sources cited by local media, Suarez met her mother after work that evening, changed into running clothes and set out alone along the Belt Parkway toward the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge; she was training for the New York City Marathon. At about 8 p.m. she told her father by phone that she was about half a mile from the spot where she was to meet her parents. When she failed to arrive and stopped answering her phone, her father searched the trail and found her near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway, stabbed on both sides of the neck. She is believed to have run about another 100 feet after the attack before collapsing.
In its media release, the NYPD said Suarez sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and asked anyone who saw her between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. that evening to come forward. Investigators said her cellphone and jewelry were still with her, with no indication of robbery or sexual assault, and that the attack is currently believed to have been random; no motive has been established and the attacker remains at large.
Over the weekend, police searched the area with K-9 units, drones and dive teams. On November 2, officers handed out flyers near the scene seeking tips. Suarez worked at a TD Bank branch in the Caesar's Bay Shopping Center.
