New Zealand: Government Grants $300,000 for Backup Generators at 10 Regional Radio Stations to Protect Emergency Information

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

New Zealand's Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell announced on November 3 a $300,000 grant from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) to support the Regional Emergency Broadcasting programme, investing in the resilience of independent radio broadcasters so regional communities can access vital emergency information when electricity, internet or telecommunications services are disrupted.

The funding will support the installation of back-up generators and associated infrastructure at 10 independently owned regional radio stations throughout the country, including Coromandel FM. The work will be co-ordinated by the Independent Media Association in partnership with the participating regional broadcasters.

The ministers said regional radio is a first source of information for many communities in an emergency, and backup power will let stations keep broadcasting official emergency information when the main grid and communications networks are damaged.
