Honolulu Downtown-Chinatown Neighborhood Board Meets November 5, With Chinese Chamber's Chinatown Revitalization Work in Focus

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Honolulu's Downtown-Chinatown Neighborhood Board No. 13 will hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. on November 5 at the Ke'elikolani Middle School library, 1302 Queen Emma Street. Honolulu is in Honolulu County, Hawaii, and its Chinatown is one of the earliest landing places for Chinese immigrants. The agenda includes public safety reports and a concrete roadway repair plan for King Street and Hotel Street, among other community items.

At an earlier board meeting, Sonny Zhang, executive vice president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, reported progress on the Chinatown White Paper student research project and outlined three initiatives: launching QR-code self-guided building history tours, targeted for completion by year's end; updating the merchant directory, with a possible print edition for Waikiki hotels; and working with tour operators recommended by the Hawaii Tourism Authority to develop tours. These revitalization ideas are expected to remain a focus for the Chinatown community.

Chinatown is one of Honolulu's oldest commercial districts and one of the first places Chinese immigrants settled. In recent years the city has continued investing in public safety, sanitation, infrastructure and public spaces to revive the district, and the Chamber's white paper project starts from the community itself, documenting Chinatown's building history and merchant resources so visitors and residents can more easily learn the neighborhood's stories. The Chamber says that once the directory and history tours are complete, they will help turn Chinatown's cultural resources into real foot traffic and more business for local merchants.
