Washington Mayor Election: AP Projects Janeese Lewis George Wins, Succeeding Bowser

The Associated Press called the District of Columbia mayoral race at 9:56 p.m. ET on November 3 for Democrat Janeese Lewis George, who will succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser, now finishing her third term after deciding not to seek a fourth. Lewis George is scheduled to take office in January 2027.
Results around 10 p.m. showed Lewis George with about 84% of the vote, ahead of independent Rhonda Hamilton at about 10.3% and D.C. Statehood Green Party candidate Robert L. Gross. The results are unofficial until certified by the D.C. Board of Elections.
Lewis George, 38, is the Ward 4 councilmember and a third-generation Washingtonian who identifies as a democratic socialist. She won the Democratic nomination in the June primary over former councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. Her platform included universal affordable childcare, expanded rent stabilization and expanded free transit benefits.
