University of Minnesota First-Gen Week Features Chinese American Student Kody Chen

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, is holding First-Generation Celebration Week from November 2 to 6, honoring students who are the first in their families to attend college and the experiences and perspectives they bring. A university story published November 2 and updated November 3 introduced several students, including Kody Chen, who majors in management information systems and supply chain and operations management. Chen is active in campus leadership and organizations including the Multicultural Greek Council, the Chinese American Student Association and the Pi Delta Psi fraternity.

First-generation students are those whose parents did not complete a college degree; in navigating enrollment, course selection, internships and career planning, they often must find their own way and rely more on campus organizations and support networks. For Chen, groups such as the Chinese American Student Association are both a source of cultural belonging and a platform for building organizational and leadership skills. The university said the week aims to recognize the achievements of first-generation students past and present and to show how their experiences shape the campus. For Chinese American families in the Twin Cities, the story also presents a real picture of Chinese American students at a flagship university: working through their studies while taking responsibility in student organizations and serving the community.
