Milwaukee Public Schools Hit by $450,000 Bank Impersonation Fraud, Bank Has Recovered $255,000

Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin — Milwaukee Public Schools announced on November 3 that the district was the victim of a $450,000 bank impersonation fraud and has named an acting chief financial officer to handle the aftermath and cooperate with the investigation. The district said it discovered the fraud, committed by an outside party against funds it holds at U.S. Bank, on November 2; the bank has so far recovered about $255,000 and is working to recover the remaining $195,000.
The district said Jennifer Buros, who joined as deputy chief financial officer in July, will serve as acting CFO during the investigation; Aycha Sawa, who has been CFO since September 2024, remains employed by the district. The district has notified the FBI, the Wisconsin Statewide Intelligence Center, the Milwaukee Police Department and its own Office of Accountability and Efficiency, and has opened an internal investigation.
Superintendent Brenda Cassellius joined the district in March 2025. The district said it will share more as the investigation progresses, with the first priorities being recovering the funds and closing the financial-process gaps, while keeping schools running normally.
